Thank you for your interest in joining Avant Garde Dance Company’s Board. AGDC is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and governed by a Board of Directors.
The company has performed and produced work across the UK and internationally, including The Place, Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells, Southbank Centre, Barbican, Latitude, GDIF, Brighton Dome, Barcelona Festival and Madison Square Garden, New York.
AGDC has reached over 200,000 audiences, engaged over 5,000 young people, and was nominated for Best Independent Dance Company in the National Dance Awards.
Why now
A bold new phase for AGDC
2026/27 is an exciting moment for the company. The next major work, East Side Story, is a hip-hop dance theatre retelling of Romeo & Juliet / West Side Story, set in contemporary East London.
The work has been commissioned by Dance East, supported by Shoreditch Town Hall, and will go into R&D in Autumn 2026. Recent commissions include FIFA The Best Awards, 180 VR films at the National Gallery, and Illegal Dance touring in the Netherlands.

The role
What a board member does
Board Members are responsible for the management, finances and governance of the organisation. They are not responsible for the day-to-day running of the company.
The role is voluntary. Members attend quarterly board meetings, are encouraged to attend performances and events, and may sit on subcommittees where their expertise can have the greatest impact.
Key responsibilities
- Comply with the governing document, company law and relevant regulations.
- Advocate, champion and promote Avant Garde Dance Company.
- Contribute to strategic and business planning.
- Attend Board meetings and contribute expertise to support the Directors.
- Use the Board position as a fundraising tool through PR, advocacy and networking.
- Work collaboratively with Directors and maintain regular communication with the senior management team.

Performance & participation
Interest in performance making, participatory practice and work with children and young people.
Finance & governance
An understanding of business finance and the confidence to contribute to robust governance.
Social awareness
Awareness of social and cultural issues, particularly those impacting young people.
Advocacy
An appetite to use networks, PR and advocacy to support fundraising and opportunity building.
Local knowledge
Knowledge of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Greenwich and Lewisham is especially valuable.
